American University is a highly regarded, private Methodist-affiliated institution located in Washington, DC. Its location in the nation's capital makes it an ideal campus for those who are interested in entering the world of politics after graduation. In fact, "Princeton Review" has recognized American University's students for a number of years as being some of the most politically active in the United States.
American University, which offers a liberal arts curriculum, was founded in 1893 on 90 acres of land that a Methodist bishop, John Fletcher Hurst, had purchased. Hurst's dream was to build a nonsectarian national university that would educate students interested in serving the public.
In 1914, American University admitted its first students. Of the 28 students that first year, 4 were women, which was quite remarkable, considering that women wouldn't even win the right to vote in the United States until 1920.
Today, American University still prides itself on being a diverse campus. Its students come from all over the world and from all over the United States. In addition, American University is very proud of its School of International Service, which is the largest school of international affairs in the United States.
This is a small university that has an enrollment of approximately 7,000 undergraduate students and offers a low student-to-faculty ratio. In fact, most of this private university's classes have fewer than 20 students.
In addition to its School of International Service, American University also offers six other major schools and colleges, including its College of Arts and Sciences, School of Public Affairs, the Kogod School of Business, Washington College of Law, and a School of Communication. This university also offers masters and doctoral degrees, as well.
American University's approximately 90-acre main campus is located about 16 minutes by metro from downtown Washington, DC in the northwest section of town. Its Tenley satellite campus is also located in northwest Washington, DC.
This university has a number of sororities and fraternities on campus, as well as more than 300 clubs and organizations for its students. American University's sports teams participate in the NCAA Division I Patriot League and are known as the Eagles. Although the school does not have a football team, some of the sports it does compete in include women's and men's basketball, soccer and lacrosse.
American University also boasts a beautiful, state-of-the-art theater and exhibition area known as the Katzen Arts Center.
